Remote Observing Policy

Unattended remote observing with the CSO is permitted under the following conditions:

  • Prior approval is obtained from the CSO Manager, Simon Radford sradford@caltech.edu.
  • Remote observing is carried out from HP.
  • Remote observing is not undertaken if inclement weather is present or is forecast. “Inclement weather” includes, but is not limited to:
    • humidity above 60%;
    • wind gusts above 25 mph;
    • thunderstorms;
    • snow, ice, fog, or rain.
  • Remote observing shall not commence until 2 hours after sunset. By this time most, and we hope all, summit tourists have departed.
  • Remote observing shall cease before sunrise to avoid illuminating the telescope with the sun during the early morning daytime .
  • The shutter shall be operated only by a person at the telescope.
  • The two person rule still applies. If an observer has to go to the telescope for any reason, such as to clear a hardware problem, then a second person must also go along.

If you have any question about these conditions, please contact the CSO Manager. Any problems with remote observing may lead to modifications, restrictions, or suspension of the program. Please contact the CSO Manager with any suggestions for improving the program.

Remote Observing Procedure

  1. Obtain approval from the CSO manager.
  2. Test your computer configuration prior to remote observing. Problems, such as a firewall preventing access, will be easier to solve the problem during regular hours (M–F 9–5 pm HST) when the staff are available.
    1. Connect to kilauea with ssh to run the UIP.
    2. Connect to hau with ssh to run the antenna monitor (amon).
  3. Prior to leaving the telescope:
    1. Check the latest weather conditions and forecast. (Weather resources)
    2. Walk outside and take a look. Check the area to ensure no tourists are still there. If tourists are present, delay your departure.
    3. Lock all lower level interior and exterior doors.
    4. Make sure the stop buttons are pulled.
    5. Make sure the surveillance cameras are activate.
  4. Plan how to return to the telescope in case of a problem. Remember the two person rule applies.
  5. Before sunrise, return to the telescope to close the shutter. Remember the two person rule applies.
  6. At the end of observing, put the telescope in a reasonable stow position, i. e., AZ, ZA: 90,54. After the telescope is stowed, type IDLE into the UIP to disable the telescope drives and push the stop button.

Contact the CSO Manager if there are any concerns or problems.
